How to Place a Rug Under a Bed: A Bedroom Size Guide

handmade kilim rug for bedroom

There is a small moment every morning that a bedroom rug is made for. You swing your legs out of bed, your bare feet touch the floor, and you find out whether the room is kind to you or not. On marble or tile, the answer in the cooler months is usually "not really."

A rug fixes that, but only if it is the right size and in the right place. Too small, and it looks like a doormat lost under the bed. Too far from the bed, and your feet still land on cold stone. This guide covers how to size and place a rug for any bed, with layouts that work in real UAE bedrooms.

What size rug goes under a bed? The rug should extend at least 45 cm beyond the sides and foot of the bed, and ideally about 60 cm, so your feet land on wool when you step out. It usually sits under the bottom half to two thirds of the bed, with the headboard end left off the rug. If a single large rug will not fit your bed size, a pair of runners, one on each side, gives the same result.

The Three Rules That Work for Any Bed

1. Your feet should land on the rug. This is the whole point. Stand beside your bed and picture where your feet go. The rug needs to reach that spot on both sides, and ideally at the foot too.

2. Put the rug under the bottom half to two thirds of the bed. Sliding it up to the headboard is not necessary and makes the rug harder to vacuum and move. Leaving the top third off keeps the rug flat and the nightstands on the bare floor, which looks tidy and avoids a wobbly nightstand on a rug edge.

3. Leave a border of floor visible around the rug. In most bedrooms, 20 to 30 cm of bare floor between the rug and the walls looks intentional. A rug that touches every wall stops reading as a rug and starts looking like carpeting.

Rug Size by Bed Size

Bed dimensions vary by brand and by country, so measure your own before you decide. These are common sizes, and the layouts below are the ones that work with NAWL's handwoven range.

Bed Common size Layout NAWL rug Rug size Price
Single 90 x 190 cm One runner on the open side Nuba 90 x 150 cm Dhs. 899
Double 135 x 190 cm Rug across the foot, partly under the bed Nile 150 x 200 cm Dhs. 1,449
Queen 150 x 200 cm Rug across the foot, partly under the bed Sinai 150 x 210 cm Dhs. 1,549
King 180 x 200 cm A pair of runners, one on each side Oasis 80 x 150 cm Dhs. 549 each
Any bed Any size A single accent beside the bed Siwa 70 x 140 cm Dhs. 599

Layout 1: One Rug Across the Foot of the Bed

This is the most popular layout for double and queen beds. The rug runs across the width of the bed, with its long side parallel to the headboard, and sits under the bottom part of the bed so that it also extends out past the foot.

A 150 x 210 cm rug placed this way under a queen bed (about 150 cm wide) extends roughly 30 cm past each side. A 150 x 200 cm rug under a double bed (about 135 cm wide) extends about 30 cm per side. The rug is 150 cm deep, so around 50 to 60 cm sits under the bed and the rest sits in front of it, which gives you a soft landing zone at the foot as well.

An honest note: this layout gives you roughly 30 cm at the sides, which is less than the ideal 60 cm. It works because your feet land mostly at the sides near the middle of the bed, and the rug covers that area. If you want a full 60 cm on both sides of a queen or king bed, you would need a larger rug, around 240 x 300 cm, which is bigger than what NAWL currently weaves. For those beds, Layout 2 is the better fit.

Layout 2: A Pair of Runners, One on Each Side

For king beds, or any bed where a single rug would not reach the sides, two runners are often the better answer. Each one sits alongside the bed, starting roughly level with the middle of the mattress and running toward the foot.

This puts wool exactly where your feet land, and it works well because a 150 cm runner covers the zone you actually step on. Two Oasis rugs (80 x 150 cm) are a natural pair. NAWL's runner size guide explains how runner sizing works in more detail.

If the two sides of the bed are not equally used, you can skip the second runner. One runner on the side you get out of every morning is already a big upgrade.

Layout 3: One Rug Beside the Bed

In a small bedroom, or beside a single bed that is pushed against a wall, one accent rug on the open side is all you need. A compact Siwa rug (70 x 140 cm) or a Nuba rug (90 x 150 cm) is enough to give you a warm first step without crowding the room.

What About the Nightstands?

There are two clean options, and both look better than a half-and-half compromise.

  • Nightstands off the rug. This is the simplest. The rug sits under the lower part of the bed, and the nightstands stay on the bare floor beside it.
  • Nightstands fully on the rug. This only works if the rug is wide enough for the nightstand legs to sit entirely on it. If any leg would hang over the edge, keep the nightstands off.

Why Wool Is a Good Choice for a Bedroom

It is warm underfoot. Wool traps tiny pockets of air, so it takes the chill off a marble or tile floor. It will not heat the room, but the first step of a cool morning feels very different. NAWL's guide to a cozy Dubai winter home explains this in more detail.

It softens sound. Wool absorbs some of the echo that hard floors bounce around, so a bedroom feels a bit quieter and calmer. It will not soundproof a room.

A flatweave stays low. A kilim is thinner than a deep-pile rug, so doors, bed frames, and low furniture clear it easily, and it is simple to vacuum and shake out.

Use a Rug Pad on Marble and Tile

Smooth floors make rugs shift, and a rug that slides under a bed is annoying at best and a trip hazard at worst. A thin non-slip pad underneath keeps the rug flat, adds a little cushioning, and gives you one more layer between your feet and a cold floor. NAWL's guide to sizing rugs for marble and tiled floors covers why this matters. Cut the pad slightly smaller than the rug so it does not peek out at the edges.

Choosing a Color for a Bedroom

Color sets the mood before you do anything else.

  • Soft grey and ivory keep a bedroom light and quiet. The Siwa rug is woven in soft grey motifs on ivory.
  • Indigo and aqua tend to feel calm, which suits a room meant for winding down. The Nile rug brings that mood.
  • Terracotta and maroon feel warm and enveloping. The Sinai rug and Nuba rug suit a bedroom that wants more warmth.

These are tendencies, not rules. NAWL's color guide explains how each color shapes a room.

Four Common Bedroom Rug Mistakes

  1. Choosing a rug that is too small. A rug that only fits under the middle of the bed leaves your feet on bare stone. Measure from where your feet land, not just the bed frame.
  2. Pushing it all the way to the headboard. You do not need wool under your pillow. The bottom half to two thirds is enough.
  3. Skipping the pad. On marble, a rug without a pad shifts, ripples, and wears faster.
  4. Putting only the legs of the bed on the rug. A rug that peeks out an inch or two on each side looks accidental. Either go fully under with a clear border, or use runners.

Looking After a Rug in the Bedroom

A bedroom rug gets less traffic than a hallway, so care is simple. Vacuum on a low setting, avoid the fringe, and rotate the rug from time to time so any sunlight from a window fades it evenly. NAWL's care guide covers the full routine, including spills.

Not Sure of Your Size? Start With the Size Guide

If you want the general method for measuring any room, NAWL's complete size guide walks through it step by step. If you rent, a bedroom kilim is one of the easiest upgrades that moves with you, as explained in NAWL's guide to rugs for rental apartments.

FAQs

What size rug should go under a bed?

The rug should extend at least 45 cm beyond the sides and foot of the bed, ideally about 60 cm, so your feet land on it when you step out. It usually covers the bottom half to two thirds of the bed.

How far should a rug stick out from under a bed?

Aim for 45 to 60 cm on the sides and at the foot. If a single rug cannot reach that far, use two runners, one on each side.

Should a rug go fully under the bed or just at the foot?

Either works. A rug placed under the bottom half to two thirds of the bed and extending past the foot is the most common layout, and it keeps the headboard end and nightstands on the bare floor.

What rug size is best for a queen bed?

A rug around 150 x 210 cm placed across the foot of the bed works well for a queen, extending roughly 30 cm past each side. For a fuller border on all sides, a much larger rug or a pair of runners is the better choice.

Can I use two runners instead of one big rug?

Yes. Two runners, one on each side of the bed, put wool exactly where your feet land and work especially well for king beds.

Should nightstands sit on the rug?

Keep them either fully on the rug or fully off it. A nightstand with legs half on and half off the rug will wobble, so most bedrooms look tidiest with the nightstands off.

Do I need a rug pad under a bedroom rug?

Yes, especially on marble or tile. A thin non-slip pad keeps the rug flat, adds a little cushioning, and prevents it from sliding.

Are wool rugs good for bedrooms?

Yes. Wool is warm underfoot, softens echo, and a flatwoven kilim stays low enough for doors and furniture to clear easily.

Does NAWL deliver kilim rugs across the UAE?

Yes. NAWL delivers handwoven Egyptian kilim rugs to Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Sharjah, and the rest of the UAE, with free delivery on orders over Dhs. 550 and free returns within 14 days.
