Living Room Rug Size Guide: How Big Should a Rug Be Under a Sofa?

living room handwoolen kilim sofa

Almost every living room that feels "off" has the same problem, and it is rarely the sofa. It is the rug. Too small, and the furniture looks like it is floating on a postage stamp. Too big, and it swallows the room. The right size pulls everything together, and it is easier to get right than most people think.

This guide gives you the rules designers actually use, then shows how they work with real sofa sizes, coffee tables, and open-plan living rooms in the UAE.

What size rug goes under a sofa? The rug should be wide enough that at least the front legs of your sofa and chairs sit on it, and it should reach about 20 to 30 cm past the sides of the sofa where the room allows. For most living rooms, that means a rug at least 150 x 200 cm, placed with its long side parallel to the sofa and with the coffee table fully on it.

The Four Rules That Work for Any Living Room

1. Get the front legs on the rug. This is the single most important rule. When the front legs of the sofa and armchairs rest on the rug, the seating area looks connected and the rug looks planned. A rug that stops short of every piece of furniture looks accidental.

2. Put the whole coffee table on the rug. A coffee table sitting half on and half off the rug wobbles, and it looks unfinished. The table should sit fully inside the rug's edges.

3. Let the rug reach past the sofa. If the rug is narrower than the sofa, the sofa looks too big for it. Aim for the rug to extend a hand's width to about 30 cm past each side of the sofa.

4. Leave a border of bare floor. In most living rooms, 30 cm or more of visible floor between the rug and the walls looks intentional. A rug that touches every wall stops reading as a rug and starts looking like carpeting.

The Three Layouts, Explained

Layout 1: Front Legs On (The Most Flexible)

The front legs of the sofa and chairs sit on the rug, and the back legs sit on the floor behind it. This is the most popular layout because it looks connected and works with a wide range of rug sizes, including the ones that suit apartments.

A rug that is 150 cm deep puts roughly 30 to 40 cm of its depth under the front of a standard sofa, and leaves about 110 cm in front of the sofa for the coffee table and your feet. That is why a 150 cm deep rug works so well in a typical living room.

Layout 2: All Legs On (The Most Formal)

Every leg of every piece of seating sits on the rug. This looks generous and finished, but it needs a large rug, usually around 240 x 300 cm, which is bigger than NAWL currently weaves. If you want this layout in a large living room, the layering approach below is the practical way to get there.

Layout 3: All Legs Off (For Small Spaces Only)

The rug sits in front of the sofa with the furniture entirely on bare floor. This can work in a very small room, but it carries a risk: a small rug that is not connected to any furniture can look like a doormat. If you choose this layout, make sure the rug is at least as wide as the sofa.

Rug Size by Sofa Size

Sofa dimensions vary by brand, so measure your own before you decide. These are common widths, and the layouts below work with NAWL's handwoven range.

Living room setup Common sofa width Layout NAWL rug Rug size Price
Two-seater sofa About 160 cm Front legs on Nile 150 x 200 cm Dhs. 1,449
Three-seater sofa About 200 cm Front legs on Sinai 150 x 210 cm Dhs. 1,549
Armchair or reading corner Not applicable Under the front legs of the chair Nuba 90 x 150 cm Dhs. 899
Behind or beside a sofa Not applicable Accent, off the main seating Siwa 70 x 140 cm Dhs. 599
Entry-side seating nook Not applicable Accent by a console or door Oasis 80 x 150 cm Dhs. 549

An honest note: a 150 x 210 cm rug under a 200 cm three-seater sofa reaches about the width of the sofa and no more. It works for the front-legs-on layout, but it will not give you the extra 20 to 30 cm on each side. For a larger sofa, a sectional, or a big living room, layer a kilim over a larger neutral rug instead, as described below.

What If Your Living Room Is Large?

NAWL's largest rug is 150 x 210 cm, which suits apartments, studios, and cozy seating areas best. In a larger villa living room or an open-plan space, you have two good options.

Layer a kilim over a larger, plain rug. Lay a neutral flat or low-pile rug that fits the room, then place a kilim on top, centered in front of the sofa. It adds depth and texture, and it is a styling trick that looks intentional rather than improvised. The kilim becomes the focal point and the large rug does the sizing work.

Use the kilim to define a seating zone. In an open-plan living and dining space, a kilim under the sofa and coffee table marks out the lounge area clearly, even if it does not fill the whole floor. NAWL's villa sizing guide explains how to size up for open floor plans.

Which Way Should the Rug Run?

Place the rug with its long side parallel to the sofa. This frames the seating area, ties the sofa and coffee table together, and makes the room look wider. In a long, narrow room, running the rug the same direction as the sofa keeps the layout from feeling like a corridor.

Coffee Tables, Side Tables, and Armchairs

  • Coffee table: it should sit fully on the rug, with room to spare around it.
  • Side tables: either fully on or fully off the rug. A side table with one leg over the edge will wobble.
  • Armchairs: at least the front legs on the rug. If the chair sits at an angle to the sofa, let the rug reach the front legs of both pieces.

Use a Rug Pad on Marble and Tile

Smooth floors make rugs shift, and a rug that slides under a sofa is a nuisance. A thin non-slip pad underneath keeps the rug flat, adds a little cushioning, and gives you one more layer between your feet and a cold floor. Cut the pad slightly smaller than the rug so it does not show at the edges. NAWL's care guide covers the rest of the routine for keeping a wool rug in good shape.

Choosing a Color and Pattern for the Living Room

The size gets the rug right. The color and pattern make it yours.

  • Soft grey and ivory keep a living room light and calm. The Siwa rug is woven in soft grey motifs on ivory.
  • Indigo and aqua feel cool and relaxed, which suits a quiet seating area. The Nile rug is woven in indigo waves with aqua greens.
  • Terracotta and maroon feel warm and welcoming, which suits a room where people gather. The Sinai rug and Nuba rug bring that mood.
  • Multicolor patterns add energy to a neutral room. The Oasis rug is woven in vibrant multicolor diamonds.

These are tendencies, not rules. NAWL's color guide explains how each color shapes a room, and the interior styles guide shows how a kilim fits everything from modern to boho.

Five Common Living Room Rug Mistakes

  1. Choosing a rug that is too small. It is the most common mistake. When in doubt, go larger.
  2. Leaving every leg off the rug. Unless the room is tiny, get at least the front legs on.
  3. Putting the coffee table half on and half off. Keep it fully on the rug.
  4. Skipping the pad. On marble, a rug without a pad shifts, ripples, and wears faster.
  5. Buying before measuring. Lay painter's tape on the floor in the size you are considering. It takes two minutes and shows you the result before you spend anything.

Not Sure Which Size to Pick?

Why Buy a Living Room Kilim from NAWL

Plenty of rugs sold as "kilim style" are machine-printed. NAWL's are handwoven from 100% natural wool by artisans in Fowa, Egypt, with no synthetic backing, so the rug under your coffee table is real wool, not a printed copy. Delivery is free on orders over Dhs. 550 across Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Sharjah, and the rest of the UAE, and returns are free within 14 days, so you can see it in your own living room before you commit.

Because every rug is handwoven individually, availability shifts as new pieces come off the loom, so check stock before you plan around a specific size.

FAQs

What size rug goes under a sofa?

At minimum, the front legs of the sofa and chairs should sit on the rug. For most living rooms, a rug of at least 150 x 200 cm, placed with its long side parallel to the sofa, works well.

How far should a rug extend past a sofa?

Aim for the rug to reach about 20 to 30 cm past each side of the sofa where the room allows. At the very least, it should be as wide as the sofa.

Should the sofa legs be on the rug?

Yes, at least the front legs. This connects the furniture to the rug and makes the seating area look planned. If you have a large rug, all legs on is the more formal option.

What size rug is best for a three-seater sofa?

A rug around 150 x 210 cm works for a front-legs-on layout under a typical three-seater sofa. For extra width on each side, layer a kilim over a larger neutral rug.

What size rug is best for a two-seater sofa?

A rug around 150 x 200 cm suits a two-seater sofa, extending roughly 20 cm past each side.

Should the coffee table be on the rug?

Yes. The whole coffee table should sit on the rug, ideally with room to spare around it, so it does not wobble over an edge.

Can a rug be too small for a living room?

Yes, and it is the most common rug mistake. A rug that is too small makes furniture look like it is floating. When in doubt, choose the larger size.

What if my living room is bigger than my rug?

Layer a kilim over a larger, plain rug, or use the kilim to define the seating zone in an open-plan room.

Do I need a rug pad in the living room?

Yes, especially on marble or tile. A thin non-slip pad keeps the rug flat, adds a little cushioning, and prevents it from sliding.

Does NAWL deliver kilim rugs across the UAE?

Yes. NAWL delivers handwoven Egyptian kilim rugs to Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Sharjah, and the rest of the UAE, with free delivery on orders over Dhs. 550 and free returns within 14 days.
